SEO for Content Clusters: Why Pillar Pages Still Work (and When They Don't)
Content clusters remain effective, but only if you treat the pillar page as a launchpad, not a destination.
Content clusters — a pillar page linking to subtopic articles — are still one of the best ways to build topical authority. But I see two mistakes all the time: either the pillar page is too thin or the cluster pages are too similar.
The pillar page should be a comprehensive overview that links out to deep dives. It's not a 500-word intro; it's a 2000+ word guide that covers the core concepts and then points to the details. Each cluster page should address a specific question or subtopic that the pillar only mentions.
When do clusters flop? When the topic is too narrow or too competitive. If you're writing about 'SEO tips' as a pillar, you're fighting thousands of sites. Instead, pick a niche like 'SEO for local plumbers' — then the cluster has a real chance to rank. Also, make sure your internal links use descriptive anchor text, not 'click here'.
